Mass transfer in tidally unstable compact binaries

چکیده

The 2001 outburst of WZ Sagittae has shown the most compelling evidence yet for an enhancement of the mass transfer rate from the donor star during a dwarf nova outburst in the form of hot-spot brightening. I show that even in this extreme case, the brightening can be attributed to tidal heating near the interaction point of an accretion stream with the expanding edge of an eccentric accretion disc, with no need at all for an increase in the mass transfer rate. Furthermore, I confirm previous suggestions that an increase in mass transfer rate through the stream damps any eccentricity in an accretion disc and suppresses the appearance of superhumps, in contradiction to observations. Tidal heating is expected to be most significant in systems with small mass ratios. It follows that systems like WZ Sagittae which has a tiny mass ratio are those most likely to show a brightening in the hot-spot region.

Irradiation and mass transfer in low-mass compact binaries

This paper studies the reaction of low-mass stars to anisotropic irradiation and its implications for the long-term evolution of compact binaries (cataclysmic variables and lowmass X-ray binaries). First, we show by means of simple homology considerations that if the energy outflow through the surface layers of a lowmass main sequence star is blocked over a fraction seff < 1 of its surface (e.g...

The Stability of Double White Dwarf Binaries Undergoing Direct Impact Accretion

We present numerical simulations of dynamically unstable mass transfer in a double white dwarf binary with initial mass ratio, q = 0.4. The binary components are approximated as polytropes of index n = 3/2 and the initially synchronously rotating, semi-detached equilibrium binary is evolved hydrodynamically with the gravitational potential being computed through the solution of Poisson’s equati...

Rotational mixing in close binaries

Rotational mixing is a very important but uncertain process in the evolution of massive stars. We propose to use close binaries to test its efficiency. Based on rotating single stellar models we predict nitrogen surface enhancements for tidally locked binaries. Furthermore we demonstrate the possibility of a new evolutionary scenario for very massive (M > 40M ) close (P < 3 days) binaries: Case...

Letter to the Editor Evolution of white dwarf binaries: supersoft X-ray sources and progenitors of type Ia supernovae

The discovery of supersoft X-ray sources, described as massive white dwarfs burning accreted matter from their (more massive) companions, opens a new channel to type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). According to conventional binary evolutionary theory, if the mass ratio of the donor to the white dwarf exceeds a critical value, the mass transfer becomes unstable, and a common envelope will be formed. How...

Spin-orbit Couplings in X-ray Binaries

We discuss the influence of tidal spin-orbit interactions on the orbital dynamics of close intermediate-mass X-ray binaries. In particular we consider here a process in which spin angular momentum of a contracting RLO donor star, in a synchronous orbit, is converted into orbital angular momentum and thus helps to stabilize the mass transfer by widening the orbit. Binaries which would otherwise ...
